Answer
Does CHAMPVA cover Wegovy, Zepbound or other GLP-1s?
The short answer
CHAMPVA does not cover GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight loss. VA lists other diagnosis-specific pathways, including Wegovy for MASH or cardiovascular risk reduction and Zepbound for qualifying sleep apnea. Wegovy and Zepbound require prior authorization.
Start with the reason for the prescription
VA’s current CHAMPVA guidance lists Mounjaro, Ozempic, Trulicity and Victoza for type 2 diabetes. It lists Zepbound for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and Wegovy for MASH or prevention of major adverse cardiovascular events. The beneficiary guidance describes prior cardiovascular events for the cardiovascular pathway.
These are separate reasons for treatment. Having a prescription, or having obesity alongside another condition, does not establish that the prescription meets the applicable coverage criteria. Ask the prescriber which documented diagnosis supports the request.
Wegovy and Zepbound need a specific authorization request
VA’s CHAMPVA provider page requires prior authorization for both products. For Zepbound, it specifies a sleep study within the past 12 months verifying moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. Ask the prescriber to confirm the current OptumRx requirements before submitting.
General CHAMPVA information saying most care needs no advance approval does not override a medication-specific requirement. Keep the submission confirmation and written decision. An active benefit card and an approved drug request answer different questions.
Meds by Mail has its own eligibility rules
Meds by Mail serves eligible members who need non-urgent, regular prescriptions. VA says CHAMPVA members with other prescription coverage cannot use this mail service. A medication appearing in its example list does not establish availability of every strength or eligibility for every diagnosis.
The ordinary OptumRx network is a separate route. Before arranging a fill, confirm the drug, formulation, diagnosis, authorization and dispensing location. Do not cancel another prescription plan just to obtain mail service without reviewing the wider coverage consequences.
Check coordination and the amount you would owe
VA’s beneficiary guidance explains that another prescription plan generally pays first and CHAMPVA pays second. Tell the pharmacy about both plans so it can use the appropriate coordination process. Ask what happens when the primary plan excludes the drug rather than assuming secondary coverage will pay.
When CHAMPVA is the only prescription coverage, retail cost sharing and Meds by Mail work differently. Ask for the applicable deductible, allowable amount and estimate for your route. A quoted percentage of an allowable amount is not necessarily the same as a percentage of a pharmacy’s cash price.
CHAMPVA is separate from TRICARE and a veteran’s VA care
CHAMPVA serves eligible family members and certain caregivers. TRICARE and a veteran’s own VA treatment have different eligibility and pharmacy arrangements. Do not apply a TRICARE authorization form or a VA formulary criterion to a CHAMPVA prescription without confirmation.
If the pharmacy cannot process a fill, ask whether the problem is enrollment, coordination, authorization or a diagnosis-specific exclusion. Request the written reason and the review instructions for that decision before choosing the next step.

CHAMPVA excludes GLP-1 prescriptions for weight loss and lists diagnosis-specific coverage pathways. Wegovy and Zepbound require prior authorization; the Zepbound sleep-apnea pathway specifies a sleep study within 12 months.
